Organizational Learning and Organizational Citizenship Behaviour

Question: Discuss about the Organizational Learning and Organizational Citizenship Behaviour. Answer: Introduction: Theories of organizational behavior create an impact on individuals, groups, and structures they have on human behaviors within the organization. These theories govern the social, psychology, communication and management of the employees within the organization (Davis, 2010). The scientific theory of getting best working equipment and best-skilled workers to do the given job at the organization creates a more efficient business development in an organization. This theory makes it easy to supervise the work being done by the organization. It also makes it easy to plan and control the business organization successfully. It also increases production in large quantity. This theory also improves the labor productivity and financial efficiency within an organisation (Duncan, 2006). There is also the adoption of positive relationship with the leaders and stakeholders of the organization. This positive relationship enhances democracy in the workplace thus increased productivity. This theory can also be applied since customers are able to spend less on better and quality goods hence improved standards of living. The scientific theory provides better working conditions like ventilation, rest pauses, proper safety and enough lighting systems at the organization sites. The theory also manages disputes and conflicts harmoniously. This also improves the trust, integrity and being loyal to the organization by both workers and the management. The bureaucratic theory is the hierarchical structure of power and norms to govern the members of the organization. This theory can be applied in an organization because there is a division of labor into simpler ways, routine based on competence and functional specializations. Dividing of tasks according to specialization leads to increased benefits to the organization. It also makes it easier to get the specialist who was assigned that job for easier supervision of the work (Somech and Drach-Zahavy, 2004). This theory also calls for the responsibility of every employee to his or her assigned work. Since bureaucracy has rules to govern its workers, then no one is permitted to take up colleagues work with no permission. The hierarchical authority also applies to the managers who are categorized. This is important in an organization since the highest in the hierarchy has the greatest power to rule the organization. This also calls for order within the workplace and protocol of the mana gers governing the organization. The theory also determines how workers are paid in an organization due to the categories created. The people are according to their position within an organization. The selection of workers also depends on the skills, educational background, and competence. This theory is also fond of putting in place strict rules and regulation required to govern the workers to bring about the effective management of the organization. This theory also creates impersonal relationships between the employees to prevent corruption at the organization. Bureaucracy theory brings about efficiency and consistent execution of work by employees. All these make it easier for management to be able to govern its workers and make stable schedules where necessary. In an organization, the administrative theory of organizational behavior can be applied since it emphasizes on establishing a universal set of principles that are able to govern all organizations. This division attempts to ensure the division of labor is done according to each one's responsibility and delegation of power is done by every administration. This theory enables the efficiency of the structures and production at the organization. The division of labor makes it's more efficient since the theory is designed to handle every department at the organization. Each worker is done at a given time at a designed department. When this is applied in the organization then there, would time save on the production of the products? The allegation of power to different departments is necessary since the organization is able to achieve its goals within the given time. The power given to every department makes the administrators do their jobs of supervising the workers at their departments. T his calls for better worker done at the organization. The relationship between the administrators and the workers is also enhanced since their contact is frequent during their working period. This process makes it worthy to register a clear improvement of the productivity and the power utilized to enhance the produce is perfectly utilized. Neoclassical theory of the organization can also be applied in an organization setting since it expresses the genuine concern of every individual at an organization. The individual growth and creativity displayed at the organization development. The theory can be claimed to be a theory of change and productivity since it gives workers and employees a listening ear and always being friendly to them during the working sessions. This act enhances productive output and hence better payment to the employees. The theory also makes workers respond positively to their managers and this enhances the communication at the organization. Better communication skills at the organization will bring about trust and loyalty between the managers and the employees thus increasing the output of the products at the organization (Shani, Woodman and Pasmore, 2011). This maintained equilibrium between the employees and the workers reduces the rate of demoralizing workers and at least once can sport some inte lligence in workers and imply that to the productivity of the organization. This theory also enhances the need for teamwork at the organization that is done easily by individual behavior, interaction and how they respond to each other at the workplace. This act motivates individual and thus one finds it easy to deliver a well-done job (Will, 2012). Contingency theory focuses on the conflict resolutions at the workplaces that threaten to destroy the equilibrium made between the employees and managers. This theory sets to bring change which every member is to try to accept it effectively to enhance the output of the production. If this theory is applied to an organizational setup then it can be very effective in that different leadership styles can be used to govern the organization and the nature in which the people are being led will be different. Each event and situation are to be handled uniquely as well. The leaders have the power to make decisions to their departments for a better outcome. The theory mostly points to the manager or a leader who is expected to act differently from the rest make a reasonable decision which is for the benefit of the organization. The leader is expected to cooperate well with other leaders in different departments so enable effective working conditions. This theory calls for a leader to adjust to every situation at the organization. The ability of a leader to reason and handle situations effectively enhances the trust and respect from the employees and other leaders (Ohemeng and McCall-Thomas, 2013). A leader may also be given time to adjust to which he may be able to sustain the characters for a long period of time which will benefit the organization. The theory is of benefit to the organizational settings since both the workers and the managers benefit due to a better decision made from the managers that in most occasions are of consideration to the employees and the leaders. It also improves the correlation at the organization thus improved the output of the products (Norman, 2011). The systematic theory is a method that points out in the organization everything is interrelated and when one thing is changed then the whole is destroyed and has to be readjusted once more. The system can always change its nature and everyone is expected to adjust quickly. This theory can be applied to the organization setting since the changes it's able to make maybe of effective growth and development to the organization and improve living standards of the workers and managers as well (McKenna and McKenna, 2012). Organizational theory as a form of organizational behavior can be employed in an organization setting since it enhances the grouping of a number of organizations to work independently and operate simultaneously. The goal of this theory is to effective integration of an organization towards the completion of a project. This theory is effective since every department has different organized responsibilities to be handled and allocation of duties is easily done to different environments (French et al., 2015). In an organization there could be problems that the employees may encounter is need to solve them in the process that there I need to solve them accordingly through social concern, cultural and ethical concern. In an organization, there could be teamwork problems that occur especially when there is no coordination between the employees and the managers in different departments. This problem is solved by getting the root cause of the mistakes and weaknesses of the members. The communication between the employees and managers should be enhanced and harmonized to improve the trust and freedom of expression to improve the social status at the organization (Agarwal, 2016). The employees too got issues that could be either personal or group problems. In this case, the solutions are done on the cultural level. The individual with the personal problem could be affected by the cultural nature of the organization and in this case, he should either be transferred to a comfortable. There could be crime cases at the organization that threatens the productivity of the organization. In this case, the security measures are to be enhanced at the workplace. In an organization, a problem may occur in the case of opposition to the decision made. The solution to this problem is to create awareness to the organization in time to avoid opposition (Kondalkar, 2007). The current development in organizational behaviors is of both benefits and demerits to the organization. In this case, the actions of the managers motivate the employees to do a better job and show loyalty to the organization. This behavior at the organization brings about the effectiveness of the workplace. The aspect of good communication amongst the people which is not profitable is quite important since it enables teamwork and better productivity. This development can be criticized in that it's non-profitable and is not really considered important to the benefit of the organization. Thus the changes may not be given much thought because it may take people to adapt to it. Leaders and managers are signed duties and responsibilities at different departments which are a current development in the organizational behaviors. These responsibilities are assigned to skilled and specialized people so as to provide a perfect job at the organization. This development can be criticized in the manner that a manager may decide to perform an activity which isnt part of his duty. This is not allowed. These leaders could be able to perform varieties of duties since they are skilled but these current development made in organizational behaviors denies them the chance to exploit their skills (McKenna and McKenna, 2012). In conclusion, we notice that the theories of organizational behavior are of great benefit to the effectiveness and productivity of the organization. The theories enhance trust and loyalty amongst the workers and the managers at the organization. The problems encountered at the organizations require better solutions and consideration of all the Parties to harmonize the relationship between the workers and employees. The current developments of organizational behaviors are efficient enough to enable growth despite the weaknesses. References Agarwal, P. (2016). Redefining the organizational citizenship behaviour. With Malice Toward None By Stephen B.Oates Essays - Lincoln Family

With Malice Toward None by Stephen B.Oates About the Author Stephen B. Oates is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the author of eight other books, including The Fires of Jubilee and To Purge This Land with Blood. His task in this biography was to perpetuate Lincoln as he was in the days he lived. His purpose of this biography was to bring the past into the present for us and his students. The Life of Abraham Lincoln Although other states such as Indiana lay claim to his birth, most sources agree that Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a backwoods cabin in Hodgeville, Kentucky. In an interview during his campaign for the presidency in 1860 Lincoln described his adolescence as "the short and simple annals of the poor." (p 30). His father Thomas was a farmer who married Nancy Hanks, his mother, in 1806. Lincoln had one sister, Sarah, who was born in 1807. The Lincoln family was more financially comfortable than most despite the common historical picture of complete poverty. They moved to Indiana because of the shaky system of land titles in Kentucky. Because the Lincoln's arrived in Spencer County at the same time as winter, Thomas only had time to construct a "half-faced camp." Made of logs and boughs, it was enclosed on only three sides with a roaring fire for the fourth. The nearest water supply was a mile away, and the family had to survive on the abundance of wild game in the ar ea. Less than two years after the move to Indiana, Mrs. Lincoln caught a horrible frontier disease known as "milk sick.". Thomas Lincoln returned to Kentucky to find a new wife. On December 2 he married Sarah Bush Johnston, a widow with three children, and took them all back to Indiana. Although there were now eight people living in the small shelter, the Lincoln children, especially Abe, adored their new stepmother who played a key role in making sure that Abe at least had some formal education, amounting to a little less than a year in all. To support his family it was necessary that Abe worked for a wage on nearby farms. "He was strong and a great athlete, but Abe preferred to read instead. Although few books were available to a backwoods boy such as himself, anything that he could obtain he would read tenaciously" (p 56). Although his formal education had come to an end, his self-education was just beginning. After a three month flatboat journey along the Ohio and Mississippi, t he 19 year old Lincoln returned to Indiana with an enthusiasm for the lifestyles that he had just encountered. Unfortunately, his new-found joy did not last long as his sister Sarah died in childbirth on January 20, 1828. In 1830 the Lincoln family decided to leave Indiana in hopes of a better future in Illinois. It was soon thereafter that Abraham became a leader in the town of New Salem while operating a store and managing a mill. The next step for such an ambitious man was obvious--he entered politics, finishing eighth out of thirteen in a race for the Illinois House of Representatives in August of 1832. Abraham Lincoln was a strong supporter of Whig founder Henry Clay and his "American System." This system that arose from the National Rebublicans of 1824 was in opposition to the powerful Democratic party of President Andrew Jackson. Lincoln agreed with Clay that the government should be a positive force with the purpose of serving the people. Internal improvements were high on b oth mens' lists, and this stand made the relatively unknown Lincoln popular in rural Illinois from the start. As the Whigs rose in stature throughout the 1830's, so did Lincoln, but not without paying his dues along the way. For eighty days in the spring and early summer of 1832 Lincoln served in the military. On a constant search for Black Hawk, war leader of the Sauk and Fox Indians, he never saw any fighting but he did prove to be a superior leader of men in some of the most trying situations, including threats of desertion. "In return for his eleven and a

Plural But Singular in Construction

Plural But Singular in Construction Plural But Singular in Construction Plural But Singular in Construction By Mark Nichol In the dictionary, when you’re looking up a noun that ends in s, you’re apt to find a notation like this: â€Å"noun plural but singular in construction.† What does that mean? This description refers to words like news that appear to be plural but take a singular verb (hence the word construction, meaning â€Å"sentence structure,† not â€Å"appearance†). One category of words plural in appearance but singular in use is that of intellectual pursuits and their associated academic disciplines: For mathematics, physics, and the like, we use a singular verb: â€Å"Mathematics is difficult for him†; â€Å"The physics is staggeringly complex.† However, similar terms may use singular or plural verbs depending on the sense: â€Å"Statistics is not my favorite subject†; â€Å"The statistics are valid.† In other contexts, usage varies. Gymnastics is treated singularly (â€Å"Gymnastics is an Olympic sport†), but calisthenics takes a plural verb (â€Å"Calisthenics are boring†). Both words refer to a routine of physical activities, but noun-verb agreement is inconsistent. Some words that are plural but refer to a unified pair of objects, such as (eye)glasses, pants, and scissors, are nevertheless associated with plural verbs: â€Å"My glasses are missing†; â€Å"These pants have gotten too tight†; â€Å"The scissors are dull.† Words in several other categories are categorical exceptions: Proper names, composition titles, and words used as words are always singular, even if they are plural in form: Acme and Sons is a highly rated company. Spats is a downtown bar. Demons is a terrible movie. Shades is a best-selling novel. Hits is an informal word meaning â€Å"search returns.† Aussies is a nickname for Australians. A few words appear to be plural but are in fact taken directly from other languages in which s at the end of a word does not denote a plural form. For example, biceps (from Latin) is singular, though many people refer to the muscle in the front of one upper arm as a bicep, and kudo (from Greek) is widely employed as the singular form of kudos meaning â€Å"praise† or â€Å"prestige† though the latter form is singular. (Bicep and kudo are back-formations linguistic innovations of varying legitimacy but are not advisable in formal writing.) Rarely, you’ll see a word that is plural in both appearance and usage, though the literal meaning of the word is singular. For example, whereabouts means â€Å"location,† but one writes that a person’s whereabouts are unknown (even though a person can be in only one location at once). In addition, it involves a study of moral complexities in conflicts. The documentary can explain common contemporary issues happening in the modern world, especially the Israeli-Palestine war. For example, it focuses on one of the most significant and controversial figures in the government of the United States in the 20th Century (Grothaus 1). The documentary focuses on the war involving Cuba, United States and United Soviet Socialists Union (Grothaus 1). Cuba almost engaged in war with the United Soviets Socialists Union. In addition, the documentary provides methodologies that can be adopted in times when one has to make a quick decision (Grothaus 1). Moreover, Robert McNamara claims that some war situations might be hard and dilemmatic. However, learning is not possible when dealing with nuclear weapons because any mistake made in the process would be highly consequential. As directed by Errol Morris, the film focuses on eleven lessons that can be learned from Robert McNamara’s life. Some of the lessons learned are decisions concerning critical situations in events of war. The first lesson is to empathize with your enemy. Utilitarianism, business ethics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Utilitarianism, business ethics - Essay Example So every aspect must be examined to evaluate potential good and bad outcomes; if the goods outweigh the bads, then morally, the action can be deemed right. If there are more bad consequences predicted, then the opposite applies. As with all ethical and philosophical theories, there are more issues to be considered, nothing is quite so simple. Different forms of utilitarianism have been described over the centuries, like Bentham's pain - pleasure as bad and good consequences. (Ethics, 8), but all seemed to attempt to measure and define what 'utility' actually means. If utilitarians consider morality to be all about consequences, then how are consequences measured, which calls into question how utility can be measured and how much of it is the ideal level to aim for Hinman states: "utilitarians must answer the question of whom these are consequences for" (137). This question is highly relevant when applied to using utilitarian ethics in business, and in particular, within the context o f the Ford Pinto case, to be discussed later. There are many different versions of the theory, all trying to define what consequences are applied to and how they may be applied. One version, rule-utilitarianism, considers that a rule or code of behaviour is morally right if, by its application, the consequences are more favourable that unfavourable to everyone. The actions driven by the rule would result in benefits, or goods for all of society. One example might be a Council's Urban Regeneration Programme, funded by Council Tax. The rule is that everyone must pay, and in doing so, produce an outcome that creates a better environment for the majority living in the urban area. The flaw is that those in the suburbs, who contribute the greatest amount, will not receive as much favourable consequences, on the premise that they already have plenty of utilities. So simply following a rule would not always be equally favourable. On the other hand, act-utilitarianism, the most common form used in many circumstances, looks at the consequences of every case individually and works out the benefits before taking a morally right action. Leggett (13) in commenting on Ford's use of utilitarian ethics, says: "The utilitarian approach evaluates each action separately and the consequences that arise from it. This analysis would include any 'harms' or 'benefits' incurred by any people involved in the case." Business Ethics: In applying utilitarian principles to business ethics, the cost-benefit analysis is most often used - it is a good decision making tool. Companies will attempt to work out how much something is going to cost them before taking action that should, ideally, result in consequences favourable to everyone. That would mean the company could make a profit, while the consumer benefited from their product. Hopefully, products are fit for purpose, safe, and give value for money. No business would attempt a project without evaluation of all relevant factors first, as well as taking other issues or risks into account that might jeopardise success. Ethical business practice, using

Empowering Women - Culture vs Modern Life Essay Example for Free

Empowering Women Culture vs Modern Life Essay The world today has allowed women to hold other positions apart from their traditional roles which are being temporarily pushed aside. Temporary because traditional roles and family responsibilities can never be ignored or eliminated and it is this responsibility that women need to be empowered to encourage and give them the confidence to venture out and earn income to meet the demands of everyday life. The 20th century has become familiar with gender equality and more women and girls are stepping out of their traditional roles and embracing success despite facing economic, social, cultural and educational issues. This essay will discuss the issue of empowering women as a strategy used to help women and investment in education as the driving forces of overcoming problems and help forge a better future. Firstly, in our environment today we see more women stepping out of their traditional roles to work regardless of low or high paid income. The disadvantage on the economical level they face is the power of wealth where unnecessary spending does not allow for savings for the future. Women tend to give in to husbands demands and with peer pressure want for luxury items far beyond their affordability. For instance, our environment can influence the way we spend especially wanting what others have, for example, purchasing a vehicle can exhaust funds and create debt and borrowing. Economically this slows the growth of the economy and encourages poverty within families and the community. Secondly, the social disadvantage women face as they begin to take up higher responsibilities and thus, decision making within their household and at work encourages them to stand for their rights on any issues they face. This can lead to many social problems as they are exposed to many lifestyles such as the way they dress, attitudes and behavior changes. These changes can result to problems within the household and the community which leads to violence within families and between husband and wives or women and the community. In Bagdad, Afghanistan women who sought work in town are changing the way they dress from wearing their cultural wear, burqa (clothes that cover most of their entire body) to wearing short skirts and blouses to work. This has angered some husbands and in February 21st Pritka Singh’s husband killed her for bringing shame into the family as a mother. (Fiji Times, March 4 2013 p.19) Lastly, in most Pacific Island countries and some places within the Asian and Middle East countries, women’s role is to stay at home and look after the families while the husbands earn income to support the family financially. But as women begin to shift roles and work to earn an income, most women begin to spend most of their time at work rather than at home. For this reason most families system begins to breakup as children are left to care for themselves and the upbringing by their caretakers are under supervised can lead children to poor health. Also, divorce and broken homes happen when mothers and fathers spend time away from each other and reconciliation is beyond repair. (Personal communication Priscilla Tongi) However, even though the disadvantages are discouraging I feel that these problems can be fixed and overcome as strategies of empowering of women begin to take place. In the past, women were not allowed to stand up among men to participate in decision making but the 20th century has allowed this and why empowering of women has made a positive impact on women so far. Firstly, the advantage of empowering women to do more and engage in formal work possibility leads to economic growth. A study shows that women in Australia who held positions as board directors significantly had higher financial returns, including 53 percent higher returns on equity, 24 percent higher returns on sales and 67 percent higher returns on invested capital (www.wikipedia.org). This shows that female workers use strategies that communicate well with their employees to motivate them to perform well within the environment they work in. Secondly, the mentalities of men as the superior of both genders begin to change as women become empowered and begin to take up responsibilities similar to men. Here women have the confidence and courage to make decisions within their household, workplaces and the society as a whole. They rise from fear of being teased, mocked, seen as worthless and not important and begin to take part in important discussions with males to help their families and communities. (www.ifad.org) This social advantage helps in confirming fundamental rights of women. Finally, Education is an important element to any development within a society and without proper education poverty emerges. Through empowering of women, this strategy has encouraged more women to attend school and given the same opportunities as the male. Universities and other formal education enhances understanding on different fields like health, economics, politics etc to help them make good decisions within their families and society.(www.ifd.org) For example in Honiara at the Anglican Satellite church at Burns Creek , Literacy classes for the rural uneducated mothers are held twice a week to help them to read and write . Hence, confidence in attending community meetings and sharing in decision makings with the community become easy. Investment in education should be a priority to assist women become good role models and with educational achievements of women are more likely to be looked upon as setting good examples. (personal communication Shirley Nokia) Based on the evidence presented in this essay, empowerment of women is a positive strategy which encourages women, whereas in the past, little was done to allow women to step out from their traditional roles and into higher positions. Although the disadvantages hinder women through economical, social and educational issues, the advantages are more promising and through investment in education especially, women and girls can have a better future and make a better world for all.

F.Scott Fitzgerald and George Orwell Essay -- comic books, marvel comi

A nation’s legacy is created by the people, for the people. The legacy fashioned by a nation is known as its cultural heritage which is defined by the withstanding creations of a society (â€Å"Cultural Heritage† Web). A civilization’s cultural heritage allows future generations to learn of the past and the present generation to express what is current. Written documents and literature are important aspects of a nation’s cultural heritage because of the various perspectives and opinions expressed (Kirk Web). The American society has a long history expressed by thousands of tangible artifacts and intangible stories, but some creations receive more respect as a part of our heritage than others. Literature, for example, allows us to gain a better understanding of the country, people, and feelings of the times. The classics are revered for its formal presentation and its withstanding presence, while other written pieces are cast aside. Comic books may not be considered in the same realm as the great novels of F.Scott Fitzgerald and George Orwell; some don’t even consider comics literary works but there is a viable argument to justify their presence as culturally important pieces of literature. Similar to the great novels of our time, comics express the difficulties of human nature and are timeless works (Kalstein Web). The content of these short stories can be used as primary sources of popular culture as they are filled with historical references and have been influential in guiding the thoughts of the nation through their patriotic content over time, leaving an impactful mark in history. Freshwater & resource Essay

Freshwater is a valuable natural resource, but freshwater is only 3% of the total volume of water in the world. Two-thirds of this is found in glaciers and polar ice caps; thus leaves only 1% which can be readily acquired. Humans and other living organism on Earth need water to be able to survive. Freshwater is important in the transportation of nutrients in soil and is necessary for the propagation of plantations that support life for other organisms. Freshwater is a scarce resource; however it is easily contaminated by human activities. Human activities such as mining can contaminate rivers with heavy metals. It can also disrupt the ecological balance that requires the use of freshwater. Farmers who use excessive pesticide can contaminate freshwater supplies. Pesticides sip into the soil and flows to rivers when it rains. This human activities causes health problems, not only to humans but to other organisms as well. In some regions of the world, freshwater is not used efficiently. Irrigations and artificial dams disturb the water ecosystem. Irrigations and artificial dams direct the flow of freshwater to other paths which can harm organism who highly require freshwater. The ecological balance is destroyed which can affect several organisms that is part of the ecosystem. Excessive irrigation also induces desertification. Desertification is the decline of biological and economic activity of the soil. Desertification has been seen places around the world, such as China wherein farmers used irrigation inefficiently. Freshwater is renewable but it should be used in way that nothing is wasted. More and more people over the world are experiencing the lack of freshwater. Creating an effective water management is the only solution for this problem. References Richter, B. (2003). Ecologically sustainable water management: managing river flows for ecological integrity.
